Unterrichtssprache ist Deutsch
Der Kurs beginnt mit den grundlegenden Aufbautechniken des Wulstens und Pinchens. dann werden durch gemeinsames spielerisches Ausprobieren die physischen Eigenschaften des Tons erforscht, seine Möglichkeiten und Grenzen kennengelernt. Es werden verschiedene Arten der Oberflächenbearbeitung mit Engoben und Glasuren erprobt, um Schichten aufzubauen und den Arbeiten Tiefe zu verleihen. Selbst angefertigte Fliesen eignen sich perfekt um schnell Ergebnisse aus dem Ofen zu erzielen, die anschliessend auf größeren Objekten verwendet werden. Die Teilnehmer werden ihrem Erfahrungsstand entsprechend individuell angeleitet und bei der Umsetzung der Versuchsergebnisse auf größere Objekte unterstützt. auch wird es an einem Abend eine Diashow über Rachels Arbeiten, ihre Inspirationen und ihre Arbeitsphilosophie geben.
In Rachels eigenen Worten:
The course will begin with the basic fundamentals of coiling and pinching techniques. Then through playful experiments, and some group work, we will explore the physical qualities of the clay, appreciate it strengths, and exploit its limitations. Using an investigative approach, we shall also experiment with surface treatment through the application of slips and glaze to build layer and depth to your work. Your own handmade tiles will be perfect for this in order to get speedy results through the kiln, the results of which will later inform larger pieces made later in the week.
Students will be continually encouraged and supported on an individual basis to help them translate introductory experiments into larger pieces. There will also be a slide show presentation one evening about Rachel’s own work, inspirations and philosophy to making.

Artist Statement
I make a range of stoneware vessels with heavily textured surfaces, swathed with layers of slip and glaze to create depth and mystery to the work. The marks from fingers, tools, and each making process have always been an intrinsic part of each pot’s character. I want each pot to convey its own spirit and character...to have a pulse and a heartbeat. I want the marks to reflect the journey of exploration and learning in each pot, just as a wrinkle or dimple depicts expression and character in a human face. The impulsive desire we all have to want to touch, and the inherent emotional need to be touched, underpins the technical, creative and emotional foundations of my work. My personal intuitive touch is an integral part of these pots - a dent in the soft clay, a tear, rip, and a finger or handprint in the glaze. I also love to explore the rhythm and movement of throwing clay on a wheel, excited by the freshness and spontaneity of the results.
Materials and Techniques
I use a combination of techniques – some are pinched and coiled. Sculptural pieces are thrown and altered.
Stoneware crank clay with assortment of slips and glazes. Electric fired to 1260 degrees.
